The steep mountains and rugged terrain of the San Juan Mountains have attracted visitors to Ouray for more than a century. The City of Ouray, chartered in 1876, is built at the base of these steep mountains. Main Street, and many of the side streets in Ouray, are built on a slope. Some of the streets are mostly level while others may require a little effort to climb, or brakes when going downhill. There are numerous benches placed along Main Street where people who are not acclimated to this altitude pause, catch their breath, and take in the stunning scenery. Even locals like to pause on the benches to enjoy the scenery and conversation.

People who use wheelchairs or scooters usually have no difficulty going up and down Main Street. The sidewalks on Main Street are wide enough for wheelchairs, with curb cuts and ramps at the intersections. Most of the side streets are gravel so going up and down these streets may prove to be more challenging.

Many of the buildings on Main Street were constructed over 100 years ago. This historic architecture is appealing to many people. Entrances to many of the retail shops on Main Street have been renovated and are accessible to people who use wheelchairs. A few of the older buildings with narrow doorways and one or two steps up into the building may be less accessible.

Several restaurants and most lodging establishments in Ouray can comfortably accommodate people with wheelchairs. Visitors are advised to call ahead if they have questions or concerns.

The Ouray Hot Springs Pool has a lift that provides for easy access into the warm waters. The men's and women's locker rooms are both wheelchair accessible.

Due to the stunning mountainous terrain, and the historic architecture, there may be occasional challenges in accessing some of the shops, restaurants, and mountain attractions in Ouray. The welcoming and helpful people of Ouray are the town's greatest asset. Please ask if you have questions about accessibility, or if you need assistance.

Nearby, Ridgway State Park has received recognition for it's accessible camping spaces, paved trails and a accessible fishing pier.
